Vehicles and Construction

This will prove to be a fun week as we focus on different types of vehicles, combined with lots of construction opportunities.

Discussing different sizes and shapes, the children will be doing wheel track pattern painting to put on display.

We'll talk about different types of vehicles and their usages, including the emergency services.

As well as plenty of small world related play, we'll encourage the children to make and look at track markings in the sand play area.

With an extended area providing workbenches and tools, hard hats, high vis jackets and construction pieces, the children can immerse themselves in imaginative role play, stacking and building etc (EAD).

Just to mention that we now have staff member, Abi, joining us in Year One as our numbers increase.

During this week and next I hope to meet with parents whose children have now completed their first four weeks with us, to update them on their progress. Please do, in the meantime, approach us if you have any queries. Thank You, Helen.

Kipper's Birthday

The Kipper series of books by Mick Inkpen are always popular with the children.

During this week we'll be reading and looking at the story Kipper's Birthday (L).

This book encompasses the importance of friendship and all the aspects which come together to ensure Kipper has a great birthday !

At the playdough table we'll be asking the children to make birthday cakes and choose to put on the amount of candles to match their age (M). We'll also discuss what ingredients are needed to make a real cake.

We'll be colouring in party invitations and engaging in role play.

Maybe you could fill in a wow slip to tell us all about your child's birthday?

Colours

We'll be having fun naming and exploring colours during this week (EAD).

Activities will be colour matching games including finding certain coloured items around the room and matching up games.

Hand printing will involve choosing different coloured paints for each print and then rubbing hands together to make a new colour to identify and print.

In the soft play room we'll be looking at, finding, and naming the different coloured balls in the ball pit, which the children always love!

On a continuous theme, at story time, we'll be focusing on colour recognition books.

As mentioned last week, we'll be lending out the book Laura's Star to take home and enjoy with your child. Please do fill in the attached slip to tell us about your child's recall of the story or any bits they particularly enjoyed etc (L).

                                            Helen.

Stars

This week we'll be discussing and looking at stars, when we see them in the sky and the patterns they make.(UW)

In the main kitchen we'll be making star shaped shortbread and visiting the sensory room, as well as experimenting using torches.

At story time, throughout the week, we'll be reading the book Laura's Star by Klaus Baumgart. We will also be loaning this book out during the following week, together with a star on a stick to keep and act out the story.(L)

Of course we will be singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at song time too, whilst holding our stars and counting the points on them 1-5 in sequence ! (EAD and M ).

On a different subject, our Thomas Hardye student this term is Ellie, who'll be working in both year groups on a Thursday and Friday all day.

Just a reminder to ask that if your child has a packed lunch, please can their lunch box be clearly labelled, the same applying to school jumpers and T shirts, to save confusion. Please can you also ensure that your child has warm hats, gloves etc on colder days when they wish to play outside, Many Thanks.
                                                                                                                      Helen.

Happy New Year !

Welcome back and Happy New Year !
We hope you had a lovely Xmas and we look forward to hearing all about it.

We'd also like to extend a warm welcome to parents and children starting with us in the coming weeks. We look forward to getting to know you all.
Please do look out for your welcome packs in the parents post hanger and approach us with any questions.
I will be meeting with new parents individually after your child's first four weeks to update you on their progress.

As we have weekly themes, we'll be starting this term by discussing Winter and how to keep warm. Using methods such as sponge painting, hand printing and pattern stamping, we'll create mittens, hats and scarves to put on display. We'll also look at and discuss the outside environment and weather conditions, such as snow, which can occur.
